I love this image of Stephen Hawking surrounded by apples, and I will tell you why this strikes home for me.
Newton looked to the single apple that fell upon his head, and thought. “If the apple falls, does the moon also fall?” He invented calculus at the rate which we learn it, just to put an equation upon gravity.
At this brink of human exploration and the expansion of knowledge, we have learned so much. Those greatest minds amongst us are now surrounded by a multitude of apples, but many more remain upon the tree. There are more trees beyond that. We as a species will never stop until we have tasted the fruit of all.
Stephen Hawking in a publicity still for A Brief History of Time, the 1992 Errol Morris documentary based on Hawking’s book. (It’s playing this weekend at the Cinefamily theater in Los Angeles. If you live in the area or can travel quickly through space-time, check it out.)
